  • Madcapped Mysteries: The Most Original Murder Mystery Show EVER!!!

The most original murder mystery show EVER, Madcapped Mysteries is a huge hit with corporate events, birthday oarties and even teen/tween events. Our top detective leads the event attendees in creating a completely original crime story.

PICTURED: Walt Frasier at a Post Wine & Spirits, Larchmont, NY, whose celler is an actual historical speakeasy from the 1920s. It was the perfect setting for wine tasting, cheese plates and Madcapped Mysteries!

    Madcapped Mysteries

The first few minutes is a live action MADLIBS style exposition. The detective’s opening monologue is completed with guests filling in the blanks. A true audience collaboration helps establish the crime – victim, location and means of the dastardly deed.

THEN some or all (depending on size of crowd) of the audience become characters in the story, from friends and family, to colleagues at work or fellow students and miscellaneous towns folks (Mayor, police chief, CSI forensics, etc).

THEN our detective names a few as their formal suspects and everyone else is deputized as a detective to interogate suspects, collaborate and solve the crime, usually in small teams.

The show ends with our detective reading some or all of the final solutions. This is a common thread in just about every show, but the answers in a Madcapped Mysteries show are the most fun, and by far 💯 original. One team is named the winner. Prizes are also awarded to best actor, costume and more, as per audience votes.

I am very excited for this fall!!! We are finally returning to a normalcy schedule of classes. This session will include NINE class days. I know different folks travel different weeks, Jewish Holidays, Comic Con, etc etc etc so I have built in make up sessions. There will be a showcase on November 1st where this class will take center stage along with other invited teams.

Every class will include a series of warm up / ice breakers, games we play in every class, rehearsal, warm up to a show and corporate team building workshops. Then we play various performance games, each week highlighting 1 new scene game plus playing a few large team games that get everyone involved.

    WHY IMPROV COMEDY?

Improv Comedy is a ton of fun and a powerful tool to develop skills for the office, classroom, home and out in the world. A must for any performer, we also daily work with corporate teams and student groups using the same games to teach community, leadership, sales and more. Simply playing these games develops creativity, critical thinking, public speaking, self confidence and more.

    COME JOIN THE COMMUNITY

We have a growing community of fun folks in Times Square NYC and various hubs DC to Boston. Improv builds life long friendships. Some of our “students” are more like family now. Many of our staff are former students.

BRING THE FUN TO YOUR COMMUNITY

We tour schools, corporate and private events DC to Boston. We also work with local community centers to establish class programs for public and private programs after school, in house corporate programming and more.

Episode 1: How to get stage time! Stand Up Comedy 101

Show Notes: Ways to Get Stage Time

    Open Mics:

Open mics are shows performed by and for performers. The audience is often other comics.

Go to an open mic within the next 48 to 72 hours and get on stage for five minutes and just talk.

Find a good open mic, and go back. Avoid the bad ones.

    Barker and Bringer Shows:

These are ways to create stage time with an audience.

Bringer shows are where comics bring their friends, creating a small audience.

Barker shows involve handing out flyers on the street to attract an audience.

Barking is a way to develop audience, and get stage time.

Barking also allows you to interact with people before the show, and create a relationship with your audiance.

    Producing Your Own Show:

This gives you control over everything.

It’s a way to create consistent stage time.

Finding talent is easy, building an audience is the hard part.

    Paid Gigs:

Eventually, you may get paid to perform at clubs, colleges, or corporate events.

Even when getting paid, you need to keep working on new material, and getting stage time at open mics.

    The Comedy University

Don’t complain about paying five bucks for stage time or spending an hour on the street. Think of it as your comedy university. You’re learning what works and what doesn’t. Remember, as my friend Milinth Fowler says, “There’s no wrong, no bad, no good. Is it working, or is it not working?”

    The Process

Every time you get on stage:

    • Prepare: Brainstorm or outline your material.
    • Have Fun: Focus on enjoying yourself without being a jerk.
    • Analyze: Objectively evaluate what worked and what could have been better.

Repeat this process throughout your career. You’re never fully “ready,” but you’ll figure it out.

    Creating Opportunities

As Oran Sandel said, “If you can’t find work, create it.” If you’re not getting stage time, create opportunities. Find other people who need stage time and organize shows. This could be at school, a bar, or anywhere.

    Call to Action

Get on stage within the next week. If you need guidance, wait for my next episode. But if you’re ready, just get on stage and talk. If it works, do it again. If not, try something different.

The next four or five episodes will cover how to create your first five-minute stand-up routine.
