Welcome to Stand Up Comedy
Amazing work all. We had a few ringers and a few brave souls trying stand-up for the first time. Every one of you ripped off that band aid and took a chance, put yourself out there and took major step forward.
Before next week, check out my book on Stand Up Comedy, available on Amazon but free to you via TIC. Before the next class take a few moments to organize thoughts via the four worksheets found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KWGvgsicn43Zu4XEU1dt9TE2aLyydFOP/view?usp=drivesdk
The secret is to brainstorm and fire up your creative side before and during stage time. To do this we need to remove editing and judgement. Remove the analytical parts of your brain before and during the process.
Instead, just like I teach in Improv, focus on the possible, make simple choices without fear of failure. Then focus on having fun, sharing stories.
After your time on stage, THEN you turn on the literary editing hat. That’s when we get analytical, from an objective place, without ego and insecurity. What worked? What needs work? How can I reshape for next time?
Over the course of 4-5 classes you will have a brand new 5-minute comedy routine ready for prime time. I can’t guarantee a career in comedy, but I can say for certain, after 14 years of teaching this course, if you do the process, you will have something to be proud of sharing in public, at the bare minimum for friends and family, and possibly at a real comedy club show.
Comedy, like acting, is the opposite of rocket science. The biggest entry blockage to all creative work that requires putting ourselves out there is in our own head. The sooner we move past those blocks, the sooner we embrace and move past the techniques and finally discover our best selves on and off stage/camera/mic. Take 5 minutes to do the work of brainstorm ideas. Make simple choices. Have fun and rip off the band aid.
See you next week! Reach out with any questions!
